Spring Placement Exam information
Welcome to UC Merced! We are so pleased you are joining us. We are proud to offer Spanish, French, Math and Chemistry placement exams to you on-line. Placement exams must be completed at least 7 days prior to your orientation so you may schedule for your spring classes.
Who needs to take placement exams?

Math Placement Exam: Required for all new students. All incoming non-transfer students are required to take the MATH Placement Exam regardless of their intended School, area of study,or Undeclared major status. Transfer students should contact their advisor via the academic advisor link before taking placement exams.
- Chemistry placement Exam: Required for all students who intend to enroll in the school of Natural Sciences or Engineering. This includes undeclared students who intend to pursue a course of study in the natural sciences or engineering schools. Transfer students should contact their advisor via the academic advisor link before taking placement exams.
- Spanish Placement Exam: Required for all students, including transfer students, who plan to:
• Enroll in a Spanish course and have previously studied the language
• Major in History or Literature and have not completed a year of college level language
• Pursue a minor in Spanish
- French Placement Exam: Required for all students, including transfer students, who plan to:
• Enroll in a French course and have previously studied the language
• Major in History or Literature who have not completed a year of college level language
- Note: The UC Merced Language Placement exam is not designed for heritage speakers of the language. Native speakers should contact their academic advisor or ssha.advising@ucmerced.edu for appropriate course placement.
When should I take placement exams?

Please take the exams that are required for you as soon as possible. You'll need to have your exams completed online at least 7 days prior to your orientation date. Students may not be able to register for classes at orientation unless placement exams are completed by this date.

Math and Chemistry Placement Exams: Log on to the math and chemistry placement exam website for directions, practice tests and the placement exam page. The School of Natural Sciences manages the Math and Chemistry exams. If you have questions, please refer to the Frequently Asked Questions page found on the Placement Exam Instructions website (using the link above link). If you encounter any technical problems while taking the exam, please send an email to naturalsciences@ucmerced.edu.

Spanish and French Placement Exams: Log on to the website: http://webcape.byuhtrsc.org/nwcregister.php?acct=ucmerced Password: atwater1 (ends with the digit "1"). The School of Social Sciences, Humanities and Arts manages the Spanish and French Placement Exams.
